STANDARD FOODS

DECEMBER 2015 — RESTAURANT/MARKET

The Raleigh Architecture Company took on the up-fit design of Standard Foods, an all-locally sourced grocery store, butcher shop, and restaurant hybrid located in downtown Raleigh. The goal was twofold: to ensure that the interior design of the space mimicked the experience of a community market and meeting place, and to preserve the industrial character of the building itself.

Inside the 3000 square-foot space, market and restaurant organically flow into one another. The market’s tightly organized aisles recall the feel of an urban bodega, while strategically placed benches and tables welcome clientele. Outside, weathered steel slats trace the upper edge of the structure, and provide shading for windows that frame views of the Raleigh City Farm, emphasizing the market’s strong farm-to-table connection. Ultimately, RAC’s interpretation of this unique shopping and dining experience is at-once modern, urban, and artisanal.
